The PINK1 gene encodes a serine/threonine-protein kinase located in the mitochondria. Research indicates that PINK1 protects cells from stress-induced mitochondrial dysfunction. Mutations in this gene are linked to one form of autosomal recessive, early-onset Parkinson disease (PD).
The PINK1 gene was initially identified as a causative gene of familial PD in 2004, and interest in PINK1 has grown significantly since.
