The National Forum for Heart Disease & Stroke Prevention will present Anne C. Goldberg, MD, FNLA with the 2011 Individual Public Policy Award at its 9th Annual Forum for Heart Disease & Stroke Prevention, held September 22-23 in Bethesda, Maryland.
This award is presented to an individual that has been effective in promoting policy change to reduce the heart disease and stroke burden on a national, state, or local level. Dr. Goldberg was nominated by the Foundation of the National Lipid Association (NLA) for her efforts to promote early screening for Familial Hypercholesterolemia (FH), a genetic disorder of elevated low-density liproprotein cholesterol that, if untreated, results in premature cardiovascular disease and death. Dr. Goldberg was instrumental in bringing the topic of FH to the masses through the public awareness campaign “FH: It’s Relative–Know Your Family Cholesterol History.” The campaign basis was the NLA’s FH recommendations paper developed by a panel of experts and chaired by Dr. Goldberg, and published in the May/June 2011 Journal of Clinical Lipidology. Other educational components included patient public service announcements and tear sheets, physician radio shows and webinars, and an online resource library. Dr. Goldberg, President of the Foundation of the National Lipid Association, is a full-time faculty member in the Division of Endocrinology, Metabolism, and Lipid Research at Washington University Medical School in St. Louis, Missouri. In addition to research and teaching activities, Dr. Goldberg treats patients at the medical school’s outpatient Center for Advanced Medicine.
