More Concussion Visits: CDC figures show that the number of kids and teens going to the E.R. because of suspected brain injuries incurred during sports and other recreational activities rose 60% between 2001 and 2009, which researchers attribute to increased awareness of the hazards of concussions, the New York Times reports. The CDC’s Julie Gilchrist, one of the study’s authors, tells the paper that hospital admissions for head injuries have remained fairly steady, suggesting the underlying rate of concussions isn’t rising significantly. What’s Essential?: The Institute of Medicine is recommending that the list of essential health benefits that must be covered by insurance plans sold on future government-run exchanges be limited enough that small businesses can afford coverage, the WSJ reports. The IOM didn’t recommend specific services that HHS should require plans to include; it did recommend “listening sessions” to get public input on the matter. HHS hasn’t said when it will issue rules for the benefits to be included in plans sold on the exchanges, which kick off in 2014. New Use for ED Drug: Eli Lilly’s Cialis is the first erectile-dysfunction drug to be approved by the FDA to treat benign prostate enlargement, WebMD reports. The FDA says the drug is especially appropriate for men who suffer from both ED and benign prostatic hyperplasia, or BPH. The drug shouldn’t be taken with certain other BPH treatments such as Flomax because they haven’t been tested together, according to the FDA.
